Old Wausau East a source of inspiration for artists

Some local artists are using school -- the old Wausau East High School, more specifically -- to create artworks based on hand-carved ceramic tiles that remain in the former school's hallways.

Valerie Berkely, a member of Your Arts Network, which is organizing the effort, said one artist hopes to hook a rug based on tile designs. However, the sky is the limit as far as what people create.

"We hope someone checks the history behind the tiles, maybe they'll write a story," Berkely said.

Your Arts Network plans to exhibit the artworks in September at the Center for the Visual Arts loft during Wausau's Festival of the Arts. For more information about the project, call Berkely at 849-8041 or Kevin Korpela at 432-6952.
